autumn leaves

October 7th, 2010

It’s been 22 years since I moved from the East Coast to the West Coast, and I still miss the autumn leaves.  Because October is my birthday month, I always wanted it to be special and a time of celebration in spite of some challenges going on at home and with my family.  So the autumn colors always represented a time of transformation as the leaves went through their yearly changes from green to multi-colors and eventually falling to the ground.

I have such gratitude in my heart for growing up in South Jersey in a safe, somewhat-sheltered neighborhood and then having 4 years in Western Massachusetts where the autumn splendor was breathtaking.  I also have such gratitude for the friends who also appreciated the season with me.  As a kid, I never did take it for granted, and as an adult I carry it in my heart with warm memories.

Although Santa Monica has very few autumn leaves (there actually are a few if you look closely), my childhood friend, Pam mails me an envelope of leaves every October reminding me of  those days of my youth, and  I display my Jersey leaves proudly.
