group, group, group

February 23rd, 2013

Tomorrow I leave for New Orleans for the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) annual meeting in New Orleans.  This will be my 4th time attending this dynamic conference with group therapists from all around the USA as well as many different countries.  It’s a 6-day event complete with a 2-day group of which I’ll be a member, a 1-day “institute” given by a master group therapist as well as a huge variety of workshops and offerings as well.  In addition to the goings-on of the annual meeting, there will be lots of opportunities for schmoozing, sightseeing and exploring throughout the course of the week.

Many of my comrades from Los Angeles will also be attending the conference which is a fun way to spend time with some of my closest colleagues away from the hustle-bustle of L.A life.   Some of us have been part of a “group therapy book club” for the last few years and our recent reading, Difficult Topics in Group Psychotherapy will be featured as the author, Jerry Gans will be leading an institute.

All in all, it’s a week full of personal and professional challenges and opportunities, and I invite all of my colleagues who lead groups to consider joining me in Boston in 2014!

Promises 25th

February 2nd, 2013

Last night I had the good fortune to attend the 25th anniversary of Promises Treatment Center, one of  the pioneers here in L.A. of quality treatment with a foundational 12-step focus.  Not only did I get to rub elbows with some of my favorite addiction specialist colleagues, many of whom I consider friends, but I was part of a celebration of how addiction treatment has transformed in a quarter of a century.  It felt rather serendipitous and sentimental because I arrived in L.A. that same year (1988) and my life has certainly evolved in unexpected and abundant ways.  The perspective feels refreshing and somewhat shocking at the same time, but the gratitude is what was palpable last night as I sit here with the afterglow of the evening.
