Last week I traveled to Portland, Oregon to attend my stepbrother’s wedding, and it reminded me that family takes on many shapes and forms. I’ll always be grateful to my “family of origin” because I wouldn’t be who I am now if it wasn’t for them. Through the years I’ve been fortunate enough in my life to be “adopted” by several families and a few mentors who have been some of the most emotionally-reliable people in my life. In addition to being “adopted”, I’ve also adopted others who have also become a part of my internal world as well.

Coming home from Portland my longings for family had been somewhat quenched, but I tend to be very aware of my ongoing deeper longings for meaningful contact, and the wedding was a poignant reminder of these desires. As I continue to nurture my “family of choice”, my heart feels full, and my intention is to hold the love in my heart as a constant not as the exception.
