a healing journey

March 28th, 2016

Last year my former interns, Annabel Raymond, LMFT and Maria Gray, LMFT teamed up to form “a 13-week group for women who want to break old patterns and heal from the past”. Based on the work of Stephanie Covington, PhD, this workshop addresses healthy relationships, codependency, grief and loss, anxiety and depression as well as cultivating happiness. It offers a blend of relational therapy, somatic mindfulness, and family systems work as part of the experience. The workshop has been held in both West L.A. and Silver Lake, and they continue to expand.

It’s such a pleasure to witness my former interns flourish and to offer such a meaningful and clinically-rich workshop. If you have anyone who might be interested, please contact Annabel at 310.740.1969 or Maria at 310.319.6500. Your clients will be in for a “healing journey.”

pet therapy

March 4th, 2016

As I sit here quietly at the computer this Friday morning, there are two little guys at my side who help keep me sane. My 12 year old cocker spaniel, Cooper and “the new addition”, a 3 year old cocker spaniel named Bowie. One is snoozing and the other is looking out the window standing guard for any squirrels that happen to threaten our compound. I mention these guys because they are the greatest therapy. Don’t get me wrong–I will always be a therapy junkie as well as a strong advocate for coaching, but dogs (or cats depending on your preference) are the greatest teachers of unconditional love, unconditional acceptance and great companionship. Carl Rogers must have been thinking about pets when he developed “Rogerian therapy” because they exemplify everything he professed.

In recovery from addictions and trauma, pets can be one of the most valuable strategies for healing. Because they require care and attention–a great way to get out of our own heads–they become objects of love that cannot be equaled. If you don’t have a pet, I suggest you borrow one or volunteer with them. Don’t forget that rescue dogs (which both of mine are) are especially healing because the exchange of love and healing energy is even stronger.
